Windows made to measure – how do they differ from standard ones and when is it worth choosing them?

28.05.2025

Choosing the right windows is one of the most important decisions when designing a house, renovating an apartment, or modernizing a utility building. Although standard window sizes dominate the market, more and more people are opting for made-to-measure solutions that perfectly meet their individual needs. Why? Custom windows offer unparalleled flexibility in adapting both to non-standard window openings and to specific aesthetic or functional requirements.

In contrast to typical-size windows, which are available “off the shelf” and mass-produced, made-to-measure windows are a tailor-made product – from the choice of material, through shape and color, to the technologies used. They can meet the needs of both owners of buildings with unusual architecture and those seeking solutions guaranteeing maximum energy efficiency and unique design. Such windows are also the ideal choice when renovating a historic building, where standard solutions prove insufficient.

Therefore, below we take a closer look at the differences between made-to-measure and standard windows, as well as situations in which choosing individually designed window joinery is not only justified but even necessary. We will advise what to consider when ordering them so that the investment in this type of solution brings maximum benefits, both in terms of functionality and aesthetics. If you are wondering whether made-to-measure windows are right for your project – this article will help you make an informed decision.

What are standard windows?

Standard windows are simply the most popular type of window joinery, produced in universal sizes that meet common building requirements. Their dimensions and technical parameters are defined in the BN-85/7153-02 standard, which provides guidelines for window manufacturers. This document specifies not only the width and height of windows but also the way they open and the division of sashes, ensuring that the final product always complies with generally accepted market standards.

The range of standard windows includes both single- and double-sash models, available in tilt or tilt-and-turn versions. Their dimensions are strictly defined – for single-sash windows most often 865 x 1135 mm or 865 x 1435 mm, and for double-sash 1165 x 1135 mm or 1465 x 1435 mm. Unlike made-to-measure windows, standard solutions offer set parameters, such as the direction and method of opening the sashes. Their universal nature means they are designed for the most common applications in residential and commercial construction.

Where are standard windows most commonly used?

Standard-size windows have been a popular solution in construction for years. In the past, they dominated both in catalog projects and in individual single-family home plans, where their dimensions were included at the design stage. This allowed investors to use ready-made solutions that met general building standards.

Currently, standard windows are more often chosen in multi-family construction, especially by developers carrying out apartment block projects. They are also commonly used when replacing old windows in buildings where existing window openings match popular sizes. In single-family homes, however, there is a growing trend away from typical windows in favor of made-to-measure ones, which better meet the individual requirements of residents and allow greater flexibility in interior and façade design.

What is window measuring?

Window measuring is simply the precise determination of its dimensions, enabling a perfect fit to the window opening in the building. This process includes determining the width, height, and depth of the frame, as well as accounting for spaces for installation and insulation. Accurate measuring is crucial, as it affects the window’s tightness, user comfort, and energy efficiency. Proper measurement also ensures that the window will be not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing and in line with the user’s expectations.

Other important aspects of measuring include:

  • Measurement accuracy – all possible wall irregularities that can affect the size and shape of the window opening must be taken into account.
  • Compliance with standards – in Poland, standards such as PN-EN 12519 apply, specifying dimensional standards, including the width and height of openings and other parameters.
  • Practical application – measuring should also consider additional factors such as wall thickness, insulation layers, and the type of installation, e.g., in the building’s thermal insulation zone.

What are the main advantages of made-to-measure windows?

Custom windows, as we already know, are gaining more and more recognition, mainly thanks to the possibility of perfect adaptation to the user’s individual needs and preferences. Here are the key benefits of this solution:

  • Perfect fit to window openings – Whether it’s irregular, small, or very large surfaces, made-to-measure windows can be adapted to any project. This is also an excellent solution for balcony and terrace doors.
  • Precision and quality – Custom-made products are characterized by high craftsmanship, often using better materials, which translates into their durability and aesthetic appearance.
  • Wide selection of materials and accessories – The ability to choose between wooden, plastic, aluminum, or hybrid windows means we can perfectly match them to the building’s style. The client also has influence over the choice of accessories, such as handles or frame finishes.
  • Better insulation properties – Thanks to precise measurements and professional installation, custom windows provide excellent thermal insulation parameters, resulting in lower heating costs.
  • Unique shapes and designs – By ordering made-to-measure windows, you can realize non-standard ideas, such as arched, triangular, or windows with decorative muntins. This way, the window joinery is perfectly matched to the project, both functionally and aesthetically.

Are made-to-measure windows more expensive than standard ones?

Custom windows are more expensive than standard models, mainly due to differences in the production process. Standard joinery, as the name suggests, is mass-produced in specific sizes, allowing window manufacturers to maintain constant machine settings and produce large quantities of products. These types of windows can also be stored and sold at any time, which lowers their production costs.

In the case of made-to-measure windows, each element is created individually, according to the customer’s order. After making one window, production settings are changed, which requires more labor and time. Additionally, these products are not produced “in stock” – production starts only after the order is placed.

Although made-to-measure windows are often significantly more expensive than standard models, they offer unmatched personalization possibilities. They can be perfectly tailored to the investor’s requirements, both in terms of aesthetics and functionality. They also allow for better technical parameters, such as thermal insulation. Thanks to them, any building can gain a unique, individual character, which is why they are increasingly chosen despite the higher price.

What are the limitations of made-to-measure windows?

Before choosing specific windows, it is important to note that the production process for made-to-measure windows must take into account numerous technical, legal, and practical aspects. This type of joinery should therefore not only meet functional expectations but also comply with applicable regulations. Reputable manufacturers pay particular attention to key issues affecting the quality and safety of their products. These include above all:

  • Technical standards and norms – The production of made-to-measure windows requires compliance with established guidelines, such as the PN-EN 12519 standard, which specifies maximum and minimum dimensions, thermal insulation standards (Uw), and uniform rules for window joinery measurement.
  • Building law requirements – Windows must meet specific criteria regarding energy efficiency, acoustic insulation, and fire protection. In multi-family and public buildings, special attention is paid to fire resistance and the appropriate way of opening, as well as ensuring proper access to natural light in rooms.

When is it worth choosing made-to-measure windows?

The decision between made-to-measure and standard windows should mainly take into account the budget, functional requirements, and the specifics of the investment. Custom-made windows are therefore the best choice when:

  • the building has non-standard window opening sizes,
  • you care about the highest quality materials and precision workmanship,
  • you need windows with specific properties, such as high acoustic or thermal insulation, or UV filters.

On the other hand, standard models will be a good choice if the priority is quick order fulfillment, the window openings are of typical sizes, and the key criterion is a limited budget.
