Black windows – is it worth it? Advantages and disadvantages

14.09.2024

Black and dark shades of grey have become a permanent fixture in our homes, becoming an increasingly common choice in interior design and building environments. Elegant dark windows, particularly in anthracite and black, are gaining popularity for their modernity and ability to fit harmoniously into minimalist, contemporary designs. See one of our realisations with windows in this colour.

Choosing such window frames is not only a question of aesthetics, but also practicality. It is worth considering whether dark window frames are as functional as traditional, light ones. What are their main advantages, and what might be the disadvantages? Is the decision to install black windows a step that will work in the long run? We will try to answer all these questions below. We will also take a closer look at what dark-coloured woodwork has to offer and whether it really is a good choice for our homes, and if so, is it better in this case to opt for aluminium or perhaps PVC windows?

Black windows – current trend or timeless classic?

Until a few years ago, white and natural wood dominated window joinery, being almost the standard choice for most homes. Recently, however, the palette of available colours and finishes has expanded significantly, giving customers much more freedom to match their windows to the style of their homes and personal preferences.

Black, which may once have seemed too bold a choice, is now becoming more commonplace. Homeowners are increasingly opting for dark window frames, doors or even facade blinds, appreciating their elegance and modernity. The year 2024 is a continuation of the trend, which is particularly conducive to this trend – black windows are successively appearing in an increasing number of new developments, bringing a touch of luxury and modern sophistication to them. The colour also gives buildings a distinctive look, emphasising their unique character, while at the same time introducing a certain austerity that works well with minimalist designs.

Black has therefore ceased to be an extravagant choice, becoming a symbol of elegance and at the same time proof that windows can be more than just a functional element of a house – they can be its true decoration.

When will black windows work?

Dark window frames, especially in black and anthracite, stand out above all for their exceptional aesthetics. Their elegant appearance and timeless character fit in perfectly with modern trends in both architecture and interior design. Dark window joinery not only looks stylish, but also introduces an element of luxury and sophistication to the space.
Black has therefore become a popular choice not only on facades, but also in the surroundings of houses. It is often found on fences, stairs and even in elements of small garden architecture. Interiors are also keen on this colour – from the kitchen, living room and bathroom to the bedroom and office. Black creates the perfect backdrop for intense colours and glossy accents, and in some arrangements it becomes the main character, such as in the case of this modern house with black windows, doors, black garage door and black façade blinds.

Dark shades work particularly well in modern and industrial styles, such as loft spaces, where they work well with natural wood and rust-coloured brick. However, their use is much broader. Black also harmonises with concrete, metals such as brass, copper or gold, allowing us to create both cosy and austerely elegant interiors. With dark window frames, we can create a space perfectly suited to our tastes – from warm and welcoming to minimalist and cool.

Advantages of black windows

What makes black windows increasingly popular with builders and architects alike? One key advantage is their unique appearance. Black window frames create a clear contrast with the transparent glass panes, giving buildings a modern and original character. They stand out against the standard white PVC joinery and windows with wood imitation frames, adding elegance to any project.

In addition to aesthetics, black windows also have all the advantages of modern aluminium joinery. They are secure, dimensionally stable and offer excellent thermal and acoustic insulation properties. These parameters can, of course, vary depending on the model chosen, but in the case of aluminium joinery, practically every user will be able to choose the ideal solution for their individual needs.
Black windows are also a choice for those who appreciate style and elegance in architecture. Appropriately matched to the rest of the arrangement, they are an interesting proposition for those relying on original design. However, like any solution, black windows also have their challenges, which are worth bearing in mind when choosing them.

Black windows – what are the disadvantages?

Although, as we already know, black windows have many advantages, they are not without some disadvantages that are worth considering before making a decision. One of the main problems is undoubtedly their tendency to heat up when exposed to the sun, which can lead to increased indoor temperatures in the summer. To minimise this effect, it is advisable to combine black frames with tinted glass, which will reduce the penetration of the sun’s rays into the interior. At this point, it is also worth mentioning the material from which they will be made. Aluminium, which is not as susceptible to deformation as PVC, will do much better at these temperatures.

Another issue is maintenance. On dark profiles, dirt, dust and grime are much more visible, which may require more frequent cleaning. Fortunately, maintenance is not difficult – it is usually enough to wipe the frames with a damp cloth to restore their shine.
Finally, we must also remember that black windows need to be carefully matched to the style of the building. Due to their expressive character, they can be very eye-catching, especially when contrasted with light-coloured facades. It is therefore important to think carefully about whether their intense appearance will harmonise with the rest of the arrangement.

Black windows – uPVC or aluminium?

The choice of material when it comes to black windows is a decision that can significantly affect their appearance and functionality. Although uPVC windows are still popular due to their affordability and good thermal insulation properties, aluminium windows, especially in black, offer many advantages, especially when we are talking about modern black frames.

Why? Well, aluminium is an extremely durable and weather-resistant material, which means that black aluminium windows retain their elegant appearance for many years without the need for frequent maintenance. In addition, aluminium profiles are thinner and slimmer than those of uPVC, allowing for larger glazing areas, giving the building a modern, minimalist feel – which is often largely what we want with such solutions. As a result, aluminium windows blend perfectly with black, emphasising its crispness and elegance. The durability of the material and its response to very high temperatures cannot be forgotten either. Black profiles, as we wrote a little above, heat up to enormous temperatures especially in summer, which is not good news for PVC windows. This is because we can witness deformations, which over time will be associated not only with visual damage, but above all with a deterioration of the thermal properties of the joinery. Aluminium is much better in this situation as it is less susceptible to changes or high temperature ratings.

Which façade do black windows match?

Black windows, especially those made of aluminium, are an excellent choice, if only for modern buildings with avant-garde architecture. Their dark frames magnificently emphasise the geometric shapes of the block, adding to its elegance and modernity.

We most often see black windows in juxtaposition with a white façade, where they strongly accentuate the contrast between light plaster and dark details. In more daring architectural designs, black frames also harmonise with natural wood, raw concrete or noble marble, creating cohesive and stylish compositions.
However, it is worth remembering that the choice of black windows should be considered in the context of the overall building. They go perfectly with black external doors, as well as with other finishing elements, such as the fence or the roof, kept in the same colour scheme. This makes the whole look elegant and coherent. However, if you don’t want to go that crazy, we also recommend choosing two-tone windows, where the black frames are only on the outside. On the inside, on the other hand, you can opt for light colours.

How do you keep black window frames clean?

A common concern for those considering buying black windows is the question of keeping them clean. Are they actually more difficult to maintain?

In reality, cleaning and maintaining black windows is no different to caring for windows of other colours. However, dust and dirt can be quicker and more visible on dark frames, which may in turn require more frequent cleaning. In addition, the deep colour on black windows means that minor scratches can be more noticeable. Fortunately, both of these problems are easily solved. For everyday dirt, such as dust, simply use a gentle cleaner, available in most shops.

If, on the other hand, it is a matter of fine scratches on the surface, there is an easy way to mask them. Special black markers available on the market effectively hide minor damages, making them practically invisible. This makes black windows look perfect for a long time.
