Window installation in winter – what’s useful to know?

Many people find window installation in winter a difficult challenge. The result is that they often postpone their construction and renovation plans until the warmer months of the year. Does this make sense? 

Low temperatures, humidity or wind can seem like an obstacle. Is this really the case? Can installation in the colder months be as effective as in spring or summer? 

Is it possible to install windows in winter?

Window installation in winter is possible. What’s more, in some cases it can be more advantageous. Modern technology and the right installation materials make it possible to fit windows correctly even at low temperatures. However, it is important to follow a few important practices and rules to ensure the durability and tightness of the construction.

Temperature – the most important factor during installation

When installing windows in winter, the temperature can affect the whole procedure enormously. In most cases, manufacturers of mounting foams specify minimum application temperatures. 

Winter foams are suitable for use in sub-zero temperatures – often as low as -10°C. However, it is important to ensure that both the foam and other materials are properly stored before use.

It is also worth knowing that some expansion tapes used to seal joints may need to be heated before installation. If they are stored at low temperatures, their properties may be altered. Before starting work, it is worth – and indeed necessary – to pay attention to the manufacturer’s recommendations for application conditions.

How do you prepare window openings?

Preparing the boreholes is a step that has a huge impact on the tightness and durability of the installation. The openings should be dry, clean and free of ice or snow. If cracks or cavities have appeared in the masonry, they should be repaired before the window is installed. 

It is also worth checking that the contact surface between the window and the wall is not too cold. Too low a temperature can reduce the effectiveness of the adhesive materials used.

Which windows will work well in winter?

If you are planning to replace your windows in winter, pay attention to their technical parameters. Models with high thermal insulation are the best choice. Triple-glazed windows equipped with frames with thermal breaks provide effective protection against heat loss. What does this mean in practice? Thermal breaks reduce the temperature conduction between the interior of the building and the external environment. As a result, the cold from outside does not penetrate inside and the heat generated indoors does not escape to the outside.

An additional element that can make a difference during winter installation is suitable seals. It is worth choosing window models with flexible seals made of materials resistant to low temperatures (e.g. EPDM). Proper sealing eliminates the risk of moisture and cold air entering the building. When installing in winter, it is important that the gaskets are not too rigid, as they may impede the precise seating of the window in the opening.

Layered assembly – is it worth it?

Layered installation (or warm installation) involves the use of three layers of insulation. The first layer seals the window from the inside and protects against air infiltration. The second, in the form of assembly foam, acts as thermal and acoustic insulation. The third, placed on the outside, protects the structure from moisture and weather conditions.

The use of such an assembly in winter is particularly beneficial. The installation foam used in the middle layer requires adequate protection from moisture. With the layered approach, you will ensure a durable and airtight construction for many years.

Interesting fact: What tools will make the job easier?

During winter installation, installation foam guns equipped with flow control will be invaluable. The tools allow for precise foam application. It is also worth getting protective covers to protect the foam and other materials from wind and moisture during application.

What if the temperature drops below -10°C?

At temperatures below -10°C window installation becomes a challenge, but it is still possible. The most important thing is to ensure that the work site is properly prepared. Postponing the installation is one solution, especially when weather conditions may adversely affect the quality of the materials. However, if window replacement is urgent, there are other options.

In such conditions, portable heaters can be used to raise the temperature in the assembly area. This will ensure that the installation foam and sealing tapes work effectively. Remember, however, that the heaters must be positioned so that they heat both the masonry surface and the installation materials evenly.

Specialised heat shields make it possible to create a temporary working space insulated from low temperatures. In combination with heaters, they create conditions conducive to installation. 

Why commission a specialist?

Here the matter is simple – the specialists know how to deal with the challenges posed by low temperatures. They have the tools at their disposal to ensure that windows can be fitted precisely, even in difficult conditions. Installation foam guns with a heating system, surface thermometers or installation covers are just some of the tools that may be necessary.

This means that window replacement can take place more quickly – a particularly important issue if your existing windows are damaged.

Modern installation technologies enable work to be carried out even in adverse conditions. This means that even in winter, you can get modern, energy-efficient windows without worrying about their durability.
