Aluminium joinery in energy-efficient construction

08.06.2023

Aluminium joinery is a popular choice for energy-efficient construction because of its benefits. Read this article and find out how you can increase the efficiency of your home or flat with the right window frames.

How does the thermal insulation of aluminium joinery affect the energy efficiency of buildings?

Today, there is an increasing focus on the energy efficiency of buildings. One of the key elements in maintaining optimum temperature and minimising heat loss is properly designed and manufactured window frames.

What affects the energy efficiency of aluminium joinery?

The primary element affecting the thermal insulation of aluminium joinery is the thermal insulation gaps. These are spaces in the construction of the aluminium window frame that are filled with materials with low thermal conductivity, such as polyamide. They act as a thermal barrier, limiting the conduction of heat from outside to inside the building. As a result, even at low outside temperatures, the interior remains warm and pleasant.

Another key element of aluminium window frames that affects thermal insulation is glazing. Double or triple glazing, which consists of two or three separate layers of glass, is recommended for energy-efficient construction. Between the layers is a space filled with a gas, usually argon or krypton, which have better insulating properties than air. As a result, thermal losses through the glazing are minimised and the energy efficiency of the building is significantly increased.

A properly selected and installed seal plays a key role in the thermal insulation of aluminium joinery. Seals prevent cold air from entering the building and heat loss to the outside. It is essential that seals are durable, flexible and weatherproof, providing long-term protection against leaks and heat loss.

To further increase thermal insulation, aluminium joinery can be coated with special thermal insulation coatings. These coatings are usually made of nanoparticles or special films that reduce heat transfer through the surface of the frame. This reduces heat loss and increases the energy efficiency of the building. In addition, thermal insulation coatings can also have anti-reflective, solar control or self-cleaning properties, improving comfort and ease of maintenance.

Pay attention to tests and certifications

To be sure that your aluminium joinery meets the thermal insulation requirements, it is worth looking for products that have been tested and certified. One such certificate is, for example, the CE mark, which confirms compliance with European thermal insulation standards. Good quality aluminium joinery will also have a high thermal insulation value of Uw, which measures the amount of heat penetrating the window frame.

All this translates into energy efficiency for the whole building. Investing in aluminium joinery with good thermal insulation can bring long-term benefits, not only in terms of energy savings, but also in terms of improved internal comfort and building aesthetics.

Strength and durability of aluminium joinery – a solid solution for a long-term investment

When selecting window joinery, strength and durability are important factors. Particularly in commercial and residential construction, we are looking for solutions that will last for many years.

Main advantage of aluminium joinery – durability

Aluminium is a material with excellent mechanical strength, which means that window frames made from this material are resistant to damage and deformation. Even under extreme weather conditions, such as strong winds or heavy rainfall, aluminium joinery maintains its structural integrity. Furthermore, despite its strength, aluminium is lightweight, which makes it easier to assemble and manipulate joinery components during installation.

Another important advantage of aluminium joinery is its high corrosion resistance. Aluminium is self-protected by a layer of oxide which forms on the surface and protects it from the weather. Therefore, aluminium window frames will not rust or corrode, making them ideal for use in areas with humid climates, coastal areas or near industrial emissions.

Durability of colours and finishes

Energy efficiency is not everything. The paint coatings used on aluminium joinery are resistant to fading and colour loss. This means that aluminium window frames retain their attractive appearance for many years, regardless of exposure to the sun or atmospheric agents. In addition, aluminium joinery is available in a wide range of colours and finishes, giving you the opportunity to match your individual preferences and building style
